When we think of a book festival, we may picture authors<\/a>, publishers, new releases, panel discussions and readers who are rabid with enthusiasm. An informative literary festival is one in which people \u2014 who might never otherwise meet \u2014 share ideas and discoveries, opportunities for conversation and learning. This dynamic is what makes book festivals compelling case studies in community building.<\/p>\n

When Reading Goes From Solitary to Social<\/h2>\n

Reading is usually a solitary act. But, when it finds its place in events, that solitude and the deeply personal experience associated with it becomes animated through collective experience.<\/p>\n

Book events also help social people mingle outside their normal groups. A book club, for example, might only focus on one type of book. A festival, conversely, often spans almost every type of book. This spectrum fosters professional networking as well.

When visitors think of a festival, they first think of authors, speakers and featured guests. Remember that successful festivals need people working behind the scenes.
\nVolunteers may meet attendees, answer questions, provide directions, help with sessions\/activities and make sure speakers are on schedule. The way staffers interact with attendees can have a big impact on how inviting an event feels.<\/p>\n
